Climate’s changing everywhere, including in Ohio. In January, we’ll dive into the science of these changes with a local expert.
Dr. Jim Stagge is an assistant professor at the Ohio State University, where he leads the Hydrologic Extremes Research Laboratory in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering. His research focuses on modeling and quantifying hydrologic extremes, for example droughts and floods, under climate change, with the goal of decreasing social, environmental, and economic impacts.
Dr. Stagge will describe how climate change impacts the hydrologic cycle, affecting the seasonality of precipitation and intensifying extremes like drought and flood. He will describe how centuries of reconstructed climate using tree-rings can be linked with modern observations and climate model simulations to show how precipitation and streamflow has changed over the last century. His talk will ultimately focus on climate in Ohio and the Midwest, describing the “new normal” under climate change.
