Columbus Science Pub Presents: Listening with your Brain

December 4, 2025 07:30p.m.

$5.00

How do humans hear? How does the perception of sound shape the human brain? How does a lack of sound input shape it? What is a cochlear implant, and does it influence the brain? How does having a cochlear implant influence interactions with the environment? We will answer these questions and listen to cochlear implant simulations.

Rachael Frush Holt, Ph.D., CCC-A is a Professor of Speech and Hearing Science at Ohio State University. She teaches undergraduate and clinical audiology graduate students and advises Ph.D. students. Her interdisciplinary research investigates the role of family environment in neurocognitive outcomes of deaf/hard-of-hearing children with hearing aids and cochlear implants, as well as what acoustic properties in the speech signal contribute to the development of speech perception of diverse talkers.

Food and drink will be available from the kitchen at Shadowbox Live! Use the code “getnerdy” to skip the $5 suggested donation.
